The first shipment of Sumatra is a punitive expedition led by the US Navy in 1832 against the village of Kuala Batee (id) , currently in the sub-district of Southwest Aceh Regency (in) . The expedition is a response to the massacre of the crew of the merchant ship Friendship (en) a year earlier. The frigate USS Potomac and his crew defeated the local forces Hulubalang (in) the Aceh Sultanate . The expedition can put a stop to attacks from Sumatraagainst American ships for six years until another ship was looted, leading to the Second Sumatra Expedition in 1838.
