The kabupaten of Boven Digoel , in Indonesian Kabupaten Boven Digoel , is a kabupaten from the Indonesian province of Papua . Its chief town is Tanah Merah. Its surface area is 26,838 km². Its population was 35,400 in 2000.

In the colonial era, Boven Digoel was the site of a concentration camp where the Dutch East Indies government sent political prisoners, such as Indonesian Communist Partyactivists after the failure of the 1927 insurgency, and the leaders nationalists Hatta and Sjahrir in 1934.
