Louis Marie-Anne Couperus , born onin The Hague and died onat De Steeg , is a Dutch poet and writer . He is considered one of the leading figures in Dutch literature .

Life

Born in the Netherlands into a wealthy patrician family, Couperus spends part of his youth in the Dutch East Indies and goes to school in Batavia (now Jakarta , Indonesia ). He was the grandson of a governor-general serving in the Dutch colony, and many members of his family worked for the colonial government.

Work

Returning to The Hague in the Netherlands in 1878, Couperus published first works of poetry and prose that were not very successful. He finally became known by the publication in 1888 of his novel Eline Vere , a naturalist work marked by the influence of French writers like Zola and Flaubert . His novel Noodlot , published in 1891, receives the admiration of Oscar Wilde . We also noticed similarities of style with The Portrait of Dorian Gray , a book also translated by his wife, Elisabeth Couperus-Baud in Dutch and published in 1893.

Another of his works, De Stille Kracht (1900), takes place in Java and describes the slow decay of a Dutch resident (governor) whose house is struck by mysterious phenomena following a curse made against him by an aristocrat from Madura, whom he dismissed the regent son (prefect). It is also in van oude menschen, dingen, die voorbij gaan …(1906) that the Dutch Indies play an important role.

His work belongs mainly to the literary movement of naturalism .
