The Padri War , also known as the Minangkabau War , is the name given to the intervention of Dutch colonial troops from 1821 to 1837 in western Sumatra in what is now Indonesia .

The Padri , a group of Wahhabi- influenced Muslims on a trip to Mecca , have been upsetting Sumatra for nearly a decade.

This war marks the beginning of the intervention of the Dutch in Sumatra .
